We’ve all heard the term, “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”, but have you ever really thought about what it means?  I think a brief synopsis would be: what you put in is what you will get out.  If all you ever do is hang out with negative people, watch negative content (TV, internet, etc), you will most likely be an unpleasant person to be around.  On the flip side, if you place yourself in a positive environment, take in positive information, you will be a more positive person.  While this can definitely be applied many ways, I want to focus on digital entertainment.

Digital entertainment has evolved tremendously over time and that is why you and your family need to check out Dove Movie Reviews! The Dove family foundation is devoted to reviewing movies, so that you can know EXACTLY what the content of the movie is before you watch it.

Think about it . . .when was the last time you flipped through the television channels or perused  the newly released movies?  Were you shocked at what you saw? Did you really have to debate if the content was suitable or not for your kids to watch?

We don’t have cable, nor do I try to keep up with everything that Hollywood puts out.  I know some may consider that prudish, old-fashioned, (insert adjective), but whatever….I don’t have time to spend watching 2-4 hours of TV a night nor do I live to please everyone.  However, when I do want to watch something and I scroll through Netflix or Amazon Prime, I get quite an eyeful without even watching any of it.

There is so many negative, evil, inappropriate things available for your ‘viewing pleasure’, but why?  Why do we do that to ourselves? Have you ever noticed after watching some movies or shows, you just feel (for lack of a better term) grimy in your spirit, almost like your insides could use a good scrubbing?  On top of that, once you’ve seen something, you can’t un-see it! We have all justified the things we watch with “Oh it was JUST one bad ‘scene’.  It wasn’t like the whole movie was that way!”  The problem is that we keep justifying and eventually we are viewing things that we would be embarrassed to admit to.  I think we should imagine that the Lord Himself were sitting there next to us and make our viewing decisions that way.  I have news for you….He IS sitting there with you and sees every thing you do, whether you are thinking about Him or not.

We should guard our minds and hearts.  Psalms 101:3 says, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.” We who claim to be Christians should be very guarded about what we allow ourselves and our families to watch.

We have a weekly tradition of “Friday Night Family Movie Night!”  It can be hard to know what is kid/family appropriate, when we want to find something to watch with the crew.  A few years ago, we came across www.dove.org.  You can search for movies in theaters or movies released for purchase and see if they are rated ‘appropriate’ for your family to view.   They detail if there is any: sex, language, violence, drugs, nudity or other inappropriate content.  Below you can see an example of one of their reviews.

From the above, you can see exactly what is going to be in the movie before you ever lay eyes on it. We don’t have to worry about coming across something objectionable, and then are faced with “Do we stop, explain, and continue?” or “Do we turn the movie off and find something else?”  We have come to use Dove.org to vet movies before we ever watch them.  Dove Movie Reviews have been huge a blessing for our home.  We highly suggest you check them out!

Health and Blessings,

Amanda
